Football Runs Over Panhandle 61-17

Silver City, NM -- Western New Mexico's football team did the same as every one of Panhandle State's opponents did this season ... they defeated the Aggies in easy fashion. WNMU threw just one pass in the game (a 42-yarder) and dismantled Panhandle 61-17 in Silver City before a boisterous homecoming crowd. WNMU moves to 5-4 (3-4 RMAC) while Panhandle fell to 0-8.

Western scored on the first offensive play of the game as senior Lateef Azziz (San Diego, CA/) sprinted in on a 71-yard run from scrimmage. The Mustangs scored three more times in the first quarter to take a comfortable 28-0 lead into the second stanza. Kamalei Magnani (Tucson, AZ/), Josh Gill (Phoenix, AZ/) and Rod Windsor (Bessemer, AL/Jess Lanier High School) crossed the goal line in the opening stanza against Panhandle, who starts 13 true freshmen.

Windsor and Gill added touchdowns in the third quarter along with two Sean Sehnem (Simi Valley, CA/) field goals and 4-yard Mike Torres (Albuquerque, NM/) run and the game went into the history books as one of WNMU most lopsided victories in years.

Western rushed for 437 yards on 43 attempts Saturday for a hefty 10-yard average.

The Mustangs close out the season in two weeks on the road with a November 11 meeting with Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers are a traditional RMAC power, but have slipped of late, falling Saturday to Colorado Mines.
